For many water sports enthusiasts, their dog is a constant companion on and off the water. Sailors and motorboat drivers often take their four-legged friends on board with them. When travelling by boat, the dog must also wear a waistcoat. Even though dogs are unlikely to jump off the boat voluntarily in open waters, only a special dog life jacket offers life-saving safety. If the dog does fall into the water while travelling, the waistcoat will keep it safely on the surface. It can be rescued more easily and lifted on board. Waistcoats for dogs are therefore not only a swimming aid, but also a rescue aid.

A life jacket is mandatory for dogs on boats and yachts, but dogs should also wear a sufficiently sized dog waistcoat when training and playing on the water's edge. Some breeds love to swim or jump into the water to chase waterfowl, for example. This can be extremely dangerous, especially in rivers and streams, as the four-legged friend can be swept along by the current, regardless of its size. The dog has neither the skills nor the stamina to swim against a current. The same applies to undercurrents from sea waves rolling onto the beach.

Not only dog owners with water sports activities should attach importance to a practical dog life jacket. Professional rescue dog teams also use high-quality dog life jackets as part of their basic training equipment. Water therapy for regeneration after an operation is also being used more and more frequently for dogs. Due to their physique, many dogs are less able to stay on the surface during water therapy. With a dog life jacket and special therapy harness, they can be guided safely, their stamina is increased and it is much easier to get the dog out of the water.

A good dog life jacket must fulfil a few basic requirements: Sufficient buoyancy according to the dog's weight, sufficient wearing comfort and freedom of movement when running and swimming and a secure harness system with a carrying handle for retrieving and lifting. The harness system should ideally consist of at least two belly straps and a belt around the chest. The belts must be wide enough so that they do not cut in. The waist straps should be infinitely adjustable with Velcro or snap fasteners so that the waistcoat can be optimally adapted to the body shape. The fasteners must not open when running or jumping. The carrying handle or recovery handle must be robustly incorporated into the nylon straps so that even heavier animals can be held securely. Practical details on high-quality dog life jackets include reflective strips which, like a signal-coloured cover, significantly increase visibility in the dark. The dog tag and dog tag can be stored in small zip pockets.
