The range of construction methods of kayaks is closely linked to their possible uses. When buying a kayak, for example, you can choose between the family version or the sportier version. For longer tours, a Canadian canoe is a good choice, for sporty trips, possibly also in white water, a kayak. Canadians are open at the top, whereas kayaks usually have a cover over the opening to protect them from water and the legs are stretched out in front in the narrower boat. The two types of boat also differ when it comes to paddles: In a canoe, you tend to use a paddle, while a kayak can be propelled forward by a double paddle. The word canoe is a generic term for both types of boat, which are available as single- or two-seaters.

Buying kayaks online

Whoever decides to buy a kayak online can often save money. It is always important that the boat is of excellent quality, regardless of whether it is an inflatable or fixed model.

The different types of kayaks and paddle boats

Often, beginners and newcomers to kayaking opt for short, bulbous recreational kayaks. However, the techniques of paddling and manoeuvring are very limited and the advanced paddler quickly demands a more sophisticated boat. Narrow-bodied models are particularly suitable for a hike along the coast.

A sea kayak has particularly good running characteristics and offers high stability in the track profile. In order to make the most of these advantages, a lot of training and experience is required. The basic equipment should include a bilge pump and an electric motor, the latter replacing the steering system. The material mostly used in the manufacture of these kayaks is UV-stable polyethylene (PE). Hiking kayaks, which are otherwise used on large lakes and rivers, i.e. calm waters, are also designed for coastal hiking in sea bays. These are usually up to 4.50 m in length.

An inflatable kayak, on the other hand, is ideally suited for excursions and trips with the family. Due to its small packing size, it can be easily stowed in the vehicle, whereas all other models have to be transported on a roof rack. These boats are very stable and safe due to the PVC inflatable floor or floor with a separate valve. The other heavier boats are usually made of PE or fibreglass. Polyethylene is considerably more stable and such kayaks can even withstand violent groundings without damage.
