Boat trailers

A specially designed trailer is required to transport a boat on the road. Boat trailers must fulfil high safety requirements in terms of road safety and load capacity. The safety of boat trailers depends largely on their stable construction, regular maintenance and equipment that complies with regulations. A water-protected lighting system with reflectors, indicators and brake lights is mandatory in road traffic. Boat trailers must also be regularly approved by the TÜV and have a licence plate.

Load capacity, payload, attachment: You should pay attention to this when using boat trailers

The permissible payload - i.e. the mass of the payload to be transported - must not be exceeded, otherwise the operating licence and insurance cover for the trailer and boat are no longer guaranteed. The total load capacity or the permissible total weight, which results from the unladen weight and the payload, must also not be exceeded. The towing vehicle for the boat trailer (e.g. a car) must be able to tow the permissible total weight. Securing the boat to the trailer requires careful work and good equipment. Strong webbing with a sturdy clamp lock and lashing straps with ratchets and large hooks are best suited. At Compass24 you will find trailers for payloads of up to 100kg.

Strong fastening eyelets should be fitted in the right places on the boat trailer for the hooks. Clamp locks and ratchets must be made of solid stainless steel or galvanised steel. Heavier boats can be easily slipped on and off using winches. For safety reasons, trailer winches must be sufficiently dimensioned; the best option is to equip them with an automatic brake that can hold the load securely at all times. Winches that are too weak are uncomfortable and dangerous, as they can only be turned with enormous effort and can be damaged if overloaded to the point of malfunction.

Keel rollers and bow rollers adapted to the shape of the hull make it much easier to slip on and off, protect against pressure points and chafing and ensure that the boat is held securely in place. Keel rollers are often made of rubber or PVC, but rollers made of non-colouring and abrasion-resistant polyurethane are more stable. The hole for the bolts must be large enough so that the keel and bow rollers can turn smoothly even under load. Boat trailers are available in a wide variety of designs, from two-axle trailers for trailerable boats to small slip trailers for dinghies. Practical for harbour transport are foldable and stable folding trailers for boats up to approx. 100 kg. Compass24.de is your online retailer with an extensive selection of boat trailers and slip trailers as well as accessories for trailers of all kinds.
