Ventilation systems for yachts and boats

Everyone knows the easiest way to ventilate a boat - the hatch or porthole! However, there are other options, namely the wind scoop, the roof hatch, the solar ventilator or the deck ventilator, to provide sufficient fresh air. Of course, these and their effects differ considerably from one another. But who doesn't like a fresh breeze blowing around their nose - sometimes even below deck!

Ventilation in the foredeck and aft cabin

The foredeck lends itself directly to a large hatch. The aft cabin is very suitable for smaller hatches. Permanent ventilation is important to ensure a fresh draught. This is particularly important from autumn onwards. Solar ventilators and deck ventilators always pay off. Fans on the navigation table or above the galley help to significantly improve ventilation.

Tip:

However, it must also be said that ventilation can be reduced in winter if dehumidifiers are available. This prevents mould from forming. The transitional period is usually a problem because the boat or yacht is still in use. Mould easily forms due to the lower temperatures and the air smells musty. Set up a dehumidifier, heat and ventilate, and the problem will soon be history at this time of year too!

What should I bear in mind with permanent ventilation?

When the boat is not in use, there must always be a flow of air to transport the air outside. The exhaust air is important because it transports the moisture outside. If it is already wet outside, this is not possible. On larger boats and yachts, dorades are often used that are orientated in the opposite direction. This creates the necessary suction and pressure effect.

What other ventilation options are available?

A fully automatic fan that runs 24 hours a day and has an integrated battery is powered by solar energy, saves electricity and is environmentally friendly. Aeration and ventilation is provided by an impeller. A switch controls this fan. The big advantage is not only its environmental friendliness, but also its ease of use. Of course, there is also something for ventilating the appliances. The Compass aerator is powered by a battery (12V) and is housed in a corrosion-resistant casing. Another type of ventilation is louvre ventilation. This involves deck ventilation as well as wall ventilation. The deck ventilation is usually a ship's hatch. The roof hatch not only provides a beautiful view of the starry sky, it also provides the necessary fresh air.
