A good steering wheel is not just a question of appearance, but also of quality. Hardly any other part of a ship is used as intensively as the steering wheel, whether on motorboats, sailing yachts or even a larger ship. Steering wheels are made from different materials. If weight is a decisive criterion, a lightweight aluminium wheel is a good choice. This should be made of a high-quality and seawater-resistant alloy. Stainless steel steering wheels are predominantly used on sailing yachts as they are high-strength and corrosion-free. The construction of the spokes as a connection between the ring and hub must be very stable. The steering wheel must also be able to withstand tensile and compressive forces.

Plastic is the material of choice for smaller inflatable boats and motor cruisers. The very light steering wheels do not burden the weight of the boat or the steering mechanism. A small hand wheel, often with a rotating handle, is used to steer small motorboats or motorsailers. The turning handle allows the wheel to be turned very quickly with just one hand and the rudder to be moved accordingly. Steering with the tiller is much more direct than with a steering wheel, but requires considerably more effort from the helmsman. On larger yachts, buoys are therefore also used on the tiller to reduce the force.

Classic steering wheels made of mahogany or teak are not only found on traditional sailing yachts, they can also be found at the helm on older motor yachts. Wooden steering wheels are available with a ring or with spokes only. The appropriate diameter of the steering wheel depends on various factors. The smaller the diameter, the more revolutions and effort are required. As a result, steering wheels that are too small do not provide optimum power transmission, especially on sailing yachts, and become tiring to steer. Very small steering wheels also make it difficult to steer motorboats with outboards smoothly.

The grip and feel of the steering wheel depends on the ring diameter and the coating. With a firm cover made of salt water-resistant leather or plastic, your hands will not slip and the cover will feel warmer than pure wood or metal. Steering wheels are usually supplied with a standard cone, but this must be reduced for certain steering systems. The steering wheel hub must fit the mount exactly in terms of diameter and any toothing in order to prevent play and damage. compass24 offers a large selection of steering wheels and steering wheel accessories.
