Gangways for Yachts & Boats

Buying a gangway means giving a lot of thought to assembly and handling. In any case, a gangway for the boat must be stable enough to safely carry one or two people and their luggage. The longer it is, the more solid the construction must be. Nevertheless, it must have a low weight so that easy handling is also ensured on board. A stelling or pasarelle, as gangways are also called, only makes sense if it can be brought ashore quickly without much effort.

That is why folding gangways that are permanently mounted on the stern are very popular. The usual gangway mount for stern mounting consists of a tube that is attached by means of a plate to the transom or directly in the deck. The gangway pin is pivoted in it so that the construction can be swivelled. All fittings should be made of stainless steel. To ensure sufficient strength of the stern mountings, a larger counter plate should be fitted on the inside so that no point loads occur, especially with GRP, and the laminate is not damaged. The deck mountings should also have a water drain and a cover to prevent water from penetrating below deck.

At the shore end of the gangway, abrasive and smooth-running rollers must be fitted. This allows the gangway to follow the ship's movements without being damaged. Gangway fittings for the bow pulpit or forecastle deck are also available for exiting from the pulpit, as is more common in northern waters. This allows a gangway to be fitted either forward or aft. With folding gangways, the folding mechanism is important; it must be reliably safe even under load. Either the joint locks automatically or is secured with special locks.

Gangways made of seawater-resistant and weatherproof aluminium combine low weight with high stability. Stainless steel constructions are considerably heavier. In addition, aluminium makes it easier to attach additional fittings for lines and shackles. The nonslip coating of the walking surface is of decisive importance for slip resistance, especially in wet conditions. Under certain circumstances, large differences in height between deck and gangway must be bridged with a steep gangway. Teak grating, corrugated aluminium profiles or glued-on anti-slip coverings provide sufficient slip resistance and grip. Additional support is provided by handrails for gangways, which can be attached to the side if required. The Compass24 online shop offers corresponding gangways for boats and yachts with practical accessories.
