Halyards for setting sails are subjected to high loads and must be specially designed for this purpose. The design of halyards for sailing yachts must be very low-stretch with low elongation values, because too much elongation directly alters the sail profile to the detriment of the sail profile.

The construction of halyard lines usually consists of a sheath and a core of high-strength fibres. The sheathing braid must be very abrasion resistant because it protects the core when running in bladders and rollers. In addition, the sheathing must be handy and have a good grip so that the cordage adheres firmly and securely in the hand and winches.

High UV resistance in halyards ensures durability and long-lasting strength because the rope material will not deteriorate or harden. The core consists of high-strength, stretched fibres. Depending on the construction, made of polyester, heat-resistant hybrid fibres or extremely strong high-tech fibres. Very high breaking loads and working loads with the lowest weight and smallest diameter characterise high-quality halyard lines. Extremely strong halyards consist of a braided sheath with an intermediate sheath and a special core made of 100 % Dyneema. Coloured markings make it easy to distinguish between traps of the same quality. Halyards that are ready made to length usually have spliced thimbles with snap-fasteners for attaching the sails.
