Over time, the colour of your boat fades and loses its former beautiful shine. This means that the hull of your boat is no longer protected. To give your boat back its original appearance, it needs a new coat of paint.

The right antifouling for perfect boat care!

An important part of sustainable boat care is the regular coating of the underwater hull with antifouling. There are good reasons to avoid fouling by algae, animal growth such as mussels and slime from microorganisms: Fouling damages the gelcoat, overgrown hulls make the boat slower, heavier and therefore more difficult to steer. Heavy fouling increases fuel consumption considerably. Antifouling paints from International provide environmentally friendly protection against fouling, which must be renewed annually or several times a year depending on the fouling conditions and type of antifouling.

The antifouling required depends on the type of boat, hull material and area. Freshwater and seawater in different latitudes have different fouling conditions. Fast motorboats, racing boats and cruising boats each need special products. Hard antifouling provides a hard, resilient surface, is abrasion-resistant and is ideal for motorboats that are frequently slipped. Hard antifouling from International, such as InternationalUltra EU, provides excellent protection against all types of fouling thanks to Biolux® technology. Trilux 33 from International is a semi-polishing hard antifouling that is especially suitable for aluminium hulls. Hard antifouling can be polished with sandpaper, but leaves a thicker layer of colour after many coats.

Self-polishing antifouling releases the fouling-inhibiting biocide in a controlled manner, whereby the layer thickness is reduced. Self-polishing antifouling such as Micron Extra EU from International is effective for up to 24 months and can be applied up to 12 months before entering the water. Self-polishing antifouling does not need to be sanded when repainting, a spray down with fresh water at the end of the season is sufficient preparation. Micron WA is a self-polishing antifouling with the latest technology, which ensures maximum environmental compatibility with a reduced solvent content.

Thin-film antifouling such as VC 17M from International produces an exceptionally smooth surface that allows hardly any fouling to adhere. Due to the hard, polishable finish, thin film antifouling is particularly suitable for regatta boats, as the thin film does not increase the weight of the boat, but instead provides even more speed.

Careful preparation of the surface is essential for good adhesion and effectiveness of the antifouling. Flaking primers and old antifouling paints should be sanded off. Make sure that the old antifouling is compatible with the new paint; some types of antifouling are not compatible with each other. If in doubt, paint a barrier primer, for example Primocon from International. In order to achieve reliable protection against fouling, the recommended layer thickness must be applied; applying the antifouling too thinly will reduce its effectiveness.

For the right boat care, you will find the right International antifouling for your boat in the Compass online shop.
