The "Sporthochseeschifferschein" is the voluntary official certificate of competence for sailing a yacht worldwide on all seas. The textbook "Sporthochseeschifferschein" offers the entire teaching and examination material for the written, oral and practical examinations. Professors at the nautical colleges in Bremen and Elsfleth have been recruited as authors of the central subject areas:

- Christoph Wand for terrestrial and astronomical navigation
- Klaus Damm for electronic navigation
- Peter Irminger as an expert in shipping law
- As in the previous book, Harald Schultz is responsible for meteorology.

Numerous exercises deepen the subject matter, and the solutions in the appendix allow the knowledge acquired to be checked. In addition to the written examination subjects of navigation, shipping law and meteorology, there is also the oral examination subject "Handling of yachts". In this interdisciplinary examination, candidates are required to demonstrate that they are competent to safely handle a yacht under all conditions when sailing worldwide. "Don't be afraid of the exam" is the title of Christoph Wand's contribution - a title that could stand for the entire textbook.
