Antifouling

Antifouling for your boat

Over time, the colour of your boat fades and loses its former beautiful shine. This means that the hull of your boat is no longer protected. To give your boat back its original appearance, it needs a new coat of paint.

Antifouling is intended to protect the hull of the boat from deposits and the growth of algae, mussels, barnacles and mussel colonies. Depending on the water quality and temperature, there are a variety of fouling conditions and forms of fouling. It often only takes a few kilometres to find completely different situations in the water. For example, the level of pollutants in the water has a major impact on the fouling of the boat hull, as does the flow speed. If the boat is moored at the mouth of a river, the fouling is different from that on a lake, in fresh water or salt water, which also has different effects on the hull.

There is no single antifouling product that is equally good for all areas and waters and allows the yacht to glide through the water with as little friction as possible. Various criteria are taken into account when selecting the most suitable antifouling product, such as the boat building materials, the sailing speed, the sailing time, the berth, the application and the hull finish. Soft layers can be stripped, hard layers are sanded off. If there are damaged areas, these are first repaired with polyester and epoxy resin. The desired antifouling can then be applied with a brush.

If the old coating is still firmly attached and in good condition, it is simply cleaned of all growth and sanded down before the new coating is applied. For boats that are moved a lot, as is the case with sports boats, there are products that are self-sanding.
