Product information
Greenland - in the seventies, that was something for absolute insiders, for freaks and adventurers who were looking for the extraordinary. It was exactly what appealed to me as a young man. In this very personal book, Arved Fuchs takes us on a criss-cross tour of his dream island. From north to south, he tells of the history of Greenland's colonization through to tourism in the present day, from hunting experiences with Inuit (including eating fresh, still steaming seal liver) to his many expeditions: with dog sleds, a hike across the inland ice, the many visits with his sailing ship Dagmar Aaen and, of course, the two hibernations in the seemingly endless, month-long polar night. It is hard to imagine at first that Greenland holds such a fascination for Arved Fuchs. Greenland is synonymous with the North Pole, snow, ice, endless expanses and nothing else. But adventurer, expedition leader and circumnavigator Arved Fuchs describes the magic of the harsh, cold, largest island in the world in this book. Despite numerous expeditions to the North and South Poles, sailing through the Northeast and Northwest Passages and kayaking around Cape Horn in winter, his fascination with Greenland has stayed with him his whole life.
