Discover Hempel's latest innovation and technological excellence - the new, silicone-based fouling release system! This fantastic, biocide-free product is based on silicone and hydrogel, which gives the coating properties similar to water. This makes it harder for the organisms that create fouling to settle on the hull and make them fall off faster when the boat is in motion. Hydrogel is based on a unique, non-reactive polymers, which form an invisible protective layer between the hull surface and the water. The organisms that create fouling perceive the hull as liquid and cling to it much less readily. Can hydrogel be reform after being removed? The polymers responsible for the formation of hydrogel are distributed evenly in the coating. If the original hydrogel is removed, a new layer of hydrogel immediately forms when the polymers responsible for the formation of hydrogel come into contact with water. HOW THE SILICONE FOULING RELEASE SYSTEM WORKS In contrast to antifouling, the Fouling Release System avoids the use of biocides. This product is based on silicone and hydrogel, which gives the coating properties similar to water. This makes it harder for the organisms that create fouling to settle on the hull and make them fall off faster when the boat is in motion. The cost of the Fouling Release System is higher in the first year, but the maintenance costs are lower from the second year onwards. Silic One reduces friction and ensures a higher speed and fuel savings. The Fouling Release System can be used for all boat surfaces other than wood. Untreated (new) surfaces: Clean with a suitable cleaning agent and dry-sand with P120 sandpaper. Clean carefully with water and leave the surface to dry. For optimum protection apply four coats of Hempels Light Primer 45551 (Please note the recommended time between coats on the tin). Treated surfaces: In order to achieve the best results, all antifouling coatings must be removed and the epoxy coat exposed. Clean carefully with water and leave the surface to dry. Apply a coat of Hempel's Light Primer 45551. How to use: Flat brushes or rollers are suitable for applying the primer and tiecoat. Please read the manual before applying paint and follow the instructions. Avoid painting in inclement weather! Instructions: 1. Apply a coat of Hempel's Light Primer* 2. Apply a coat of Hempel's Silic One Tiecoat 27450* As the products are sensitive to moisture, please only open the tin directly before use. The primer must cover the entire surface to guarantee optimum adhesion. A wet film thickness of 100 ?m is recommended. Pour the paint into a paint tray and close the tin while applying the paint. Time between coats: Apply Tiecoat at: 20 C: min. 4 hours, max. 72 hours after applying Hempels Light Primer 10 C: min. 6 hours, max. 72 hours after applying Hempels Light Primer If the time between coats is exceeded, a new coat of Hempels Light Primer / Tiecoat must be applied. The paint can be used within an hour of opening the tin. An open tin cannot be stored for later use. 3. Apply two coats of Hempel's Silic One 77450. As the products are sensitive to moisture, please only open the tin directly before use. Upon initial application of Hempels Silic One 77450, two coats are necessary. In the following seasons one coat is enough. Pour the paint into a paint tray and close the tin while applying the paint. Hempels Silic One can be used within an hour of opening the tin. An open tin cannot be stored for later use. FIRST COAT Hempel's Silic One Apply a wet film thickness of at least 100 ?m. Time between coats: 20 C: min. 8 hours, max. 48 hours after applying Hempel's Silic One Tiecoat 27450 10 C: min. 16 hours, max. 48 hours after applying of Hempel's Silic One Tiecoat 27450 If the time between coats is exceeded, a new coat of Tiecoat must be applied. SECOND COAT Hempels Silic One Apply a wet film thickness of at least 100 ?m. Time between coats: 10 - 20 C: min. 16 hours. The boat can enter the water 24 hours after applying last coat. The maximum time between the last coat and the time the boat enters the water is one month. Cleaning Fast motorboats (min. 20 knots) Hempel's Silic One is self-cleaning on fast motorboats. Slow boats - sailing boats The coating can be cleaned as often as is necessary/desired in order to achieve a clean surface with extremely low friction. Hempel's Silic One is easy to clean. Choose one of the following options: OPTION 1: Clean the surface with a high-pressure washer (fresh water) OPTION 2: Use a micro-porous sponge or cloth, then rinse with a hose. Ensure that the surface is not scratched while cleaning. Important: No not use brushes with hard bristles! Maintenance It is simple and straightforward to maintain Hempel's Silic One. The maintenance costs are lower than for traditional antifouling. In order to maintain functionality, a new coat of Hempel's Silic One should be applied every year. If the boat is out of the water for more than a month, it should be cleaned using Hempels Boat Shampoo and a new coat of Hempel's Silic One should be applied before it re-enters the water. If the boat remains in the water for the entire year, a new coat may not be necessary, but more frequent cleaning will be. FAQs Does Hempels Silic One save fuel? Yes, the easy surface cleaning means the surface is largely free of fouling and reduces friction in the water. Does Hempels Silic One make boats faster? Yes, the reduced friction of a clean coating increases speed. Can Hempels Silic One be applied at low temperatures? Hempels Silic One can be applied at temperatures from 10 C? How sensitive is Hempel's Silic One to moisture? The surface must be dry before applying Hempels Silic One. Hempels Silic One Tiecoat and Hempels Silic One may not be applied in unstable weather or onto a wet surface. When can the boat enter the water after applying Hempels Silic One? The boat can enter the water between 24 hours and one month after applying Hempels Silic One. Can Hempels Silic One be applied to an old coat of antifouling? No - and this is important to note - the old coat of antifouling must be removed until the epoxy layer or the uncoated base layer, after which a new coat of Hempel's Light Primer should be applied, followed be a coat of Hempels Silic One. Is it possible to paint over Hempels Silic One with a traditional antifouling product? If you return to a traditional antifouling system, the coat of Hempels Silic One must be removed. Only silicone-based fouling release products adhere to Hempels Silic One. At what speed does self-cleaning take place? Self-cleaning is particularly effective at high speeds. Even at low speeds, self-cleaning is possible if the boat is in constant use. Does this mean that the coating will be subject to mechanical damage more quickly? Although you scratch silicone with your fingernail it may seem more mechanically sensitive, if the power is effective on a large area, e.g. a fender, silicone has good abrasion resistance. This is mainly due to the fact that the coating is soft and the energy is absorbed. What do I do if the Hempels Silic One coat is scratched? Hempels Silic One is easy to repair - simply reapply the colour system to the damaged area. Use biocides safely! Always read the label and product information before use.
